NEW DELHI: Microsoft has officially revealed that it has acquired the popular third-party app Swiftkey. The amount of the deal is not disclosed, but as per a report by Financial Times it amounts to $250 million. The Swiftkey keyboard app was launched in 2008 and is installed on 300 million mobile devices and has support for 89 languages. It specializes in predictive typing which is said to be powered by artificial intelligence.
The app is available for download for the Android and iOS users but is yet to be introduced on the Windows Phone. The app is based on machine learning technology, where it learns from the writing habits of users and suggests the next word or phrase accordingly.
Last year in October, Swiftkeyalso rolled out a new tactile network keyboard which aims to provide better word prediction. Moreover, the company was also talking with several smartphone makers in order to pre-embed its Keyboard app on devices. Swiftkey's keyboardsupports 22 Indian languages, including Hindi, Malayalam, Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
