Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the German sports car manufacturer's "definitive track car for everyday use", was unveiled in India at the Porsche Centre Bengaluru yesterday. Hailed as "the race car for the circuit and everyday driving" by Porsche, the 911 GT3 RS brings together the best of both, road-legal sports cars and race cars.

Interesting fact: The new 911 GT3 RS set a lap time of seven minutes and 20 seconds on the North Loop of the Nuerburgring. It beat the historic record achieved by the Carrera GT super sports car by nine seconds.

A "masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design', the Porsche 911 GT3 RS gets a roof made of magnesium and uses carbon fibre for the engine and luggage compartment lids along with other lightweight components made of alternative materials that allow the model to save nearly ten kilograms as compared to the 911 GT3. It gets its body comes from the 911 Turbo with characteristics such as the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings - just as in purebred motorsport cars, they increase downforce at the front axle. Additionally, the 911 GT3 RS comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard.

While its interior is based on the current Porsche 911 GT3, it comes sporting a key new feature - the full bucket seats, which are based on the 918 Spyder's carbon bucket seats. Other standard features include the Club Sport Package with a bolted-on roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket. The standard Sport Chrono Package, in addition to its integrated timers, also features the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone. The Track Precision app can be used to automatically measure lap times via GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for a range of driving parameters. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers.

Employing Porsche's motorsport heritage and technology, the 911 GT3 RS comes powered by a 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine with 494bhp and 480Nm of torque. Mated to a specially developed PDK transmission, the car can accelerate from standstill to 100Km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200Km/h in 10.9 seconds. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS also affords functions such as declutching by 'paddle neutral' - which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox - and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button have been customised for motorsport use.
